Zinc die casting in North America continues to advance through the use of technology. Technology innovations in the zinc die casting industry allow molds and machines to be more productive and efficient. Fluid velocity, cavity fill time, and pressure are measured in actual time by many monitoring instruments to ensure that high quality castings are consistently being produced. This instrumentation also ensures that pitting and flashing are minimized in final products. Other optimization methods use thermal imaging, auto die cameras, and spray systems that reduce the amount of die lubricant being used. Secondary processes such as cooling, ejecting, trimming, inspection, and machining operations also have many technology quality control steps. Most of these steps are performed by a robot and take place in a die casting cell. Robots have the ability to increase safety and productivity while lowering cost. Robots do not work independently of people. It takes skilled machinists and engineers to operate robots and ensure that the quality of castings are at the highest level. Zinc has a low melting temperature which provides less tool steel wear for large savings in tooling costs and new technologies such as submersed liquid metal pump. The hot chamber containing the submersed liquid metal pump greatly reduces production and energy costs by not allowing as much heat to escape as it would be in an open furnace.
