Zinc alloys are manufactured with zinc as the base while also containing small and precise traces of die cast metals such as copper, aluminum, magnesium, etc. ZA-8 is a zinc alloy in the zinc aluminum (ZA) family. ZA alloys were originally developed for gravity casting in the 1970’s. In the 1980’s ZA alloys evolved into both hot chamber and cold chamber die casting. Currently ZA-8 is the only member of the ZA family used in hot chamber zinc die casting. Compared to almost all ZAMAK alloys, ZA-8 has improved tensile strength, hardness, and creep performance. However, ZAMAK alloys tend to be turned to more due to the evenness between stress and strain properties. All these properties can be explained by comparing the element composition of ZAMAK and ZA alloys. ZAMAK alloys all contain 4% aluminum with small traces of magnesium. ZA-8 contains 8% aluminum while also containing small traces of magnesium and copper. These three improvements of ZA-8 over ZAMAK explain why it is the lowest density hot chamber zinc die cast alloy. When a combination of greater tensile strength, hardness, and creep performance are required, ZA-8 is chosen over ZAMAK. ZA-8 has good finish characteristics, and is usually powder coated or plated.
